This is such a trippy little book. I love many of Du Bois' books, namely Lion. And the Otto books are quite special too. But it is Pumpkinhead that takes the cake for most bizarre. Pumpkinhead is part of a series, begun but never completed by Du Bois, based on the seven deadly sins. Work Description. From Wikipedia's page for the author: www.doorway.ru%C3%A8ne_du_Bois. Peter Graves (): A well-meaning but mischievous boy who encounters a gentlemanly and not-very-mad scientist named Houghton Furlong. Furlong is the inventor of an antigravity material named Furloy, and a Furloy-based invention called "the ball that bounces higher than the height from which you drop it.". Peter Graves is an imaginativeboy of fourteen who accidentally destroys Houghton's house while trying out one of Houghton's inventions. The story is really about marketing! Equipped only with six Furloy balls, each with an antigravity pull of fifty pounds, Houghton and Peter must somehow use them to earn enough money to rebuild Houghton's house. William Sherman "Billy" Pène du Bois (May 9, – February 5, ) was an American writer and illustrator of books for young readers.
